The year was 1890. The clapboard house on Charles Street in downtown Fredericksburg that George Washington had purchased for his mother in 1772 was set to be dismantled and moved to the Chicago World’s Fair.

“A group of Fredericksburg women realized that to let this happen would be to let a crucial piece of Fredericksburg’s historic fabric disappear,” said Anne Darron, executive director of Washington Heritage Museums. “They banded together to purchase the house, which still stands today at 1200 Charles St. and is now owned by Washington Heritage Museums.”

On September 12, 2015, Washington Heritage Museums will host Saving Mary’s House, a celebration featuring a night of casino games, garden and house tours, heavy hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. The party will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at Mary Washington House. The Believers, Whiskey Django, Foxtrot and Karen Jonas will provide live music.

Admission is $75 per person, of which $25 is tax deductible. You can purchase tickets online, by mail or at the Washington Heritage Museum office, 1300 Charles St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401. The office is open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“The saving of Mary Washington’s house was an important event in Fredericksburg’s history, and we want to raise funds to continue to preserve it for future generations,” Darron said. Proceeds will support the planned renovation of portions of Mary Washington House to serve as meeting rooms, event venues and volunteer workspaces.

Washington Heritage Museums, an nonprofit organization founded and run by Frederickburg-area residents, exists to preserve, promote and maintain four 18th-century properties in Fredericksburg, Va. The group’s properties are Mary Washington House, Hugh Mercer Apothecary, Rising Sun Tavern and St. James House.
