Area nonprofits have until April 14, 2014, to register for the first ever day of community giving in Fredericksburg.

The Community Give is a 24-hour day of online giving scheduled from 12 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6.

“It is a day when everyone is asked to make a donation and show support for the local nonprofit organizations that positively impact our lives every day,” said the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region (CFRRR), sponsor of the event.

“Any nonprofit in the region is eligible to participate, from PTA’s to 501c(3) charities,” said Lisa Biever, CFRRR staff nonprofit coordinator.  Nonprofits can register at The Community Give website or by calling The Community Foundation at 540-373-9292.

The Community Foundation will provide training and technical support to all participating nonprofits.  Early registration is encouraged to provide amble time to take full advantage of this assistance.

In addition to online gifts from individual donors, participating nonprofits will be eligible for prizes totaling $100,000, given by The Community Foundation and its sponsors:

Nancy & Dave Honeywell – The Honeywell Charitable Fund of The Community Foundation
The Community Enrichment Fund of The Community Foundation
Union First Market Bank
The Robert Cullen O’Neill Memorial Fund of The Community Foundation

Prizes will include:

A $10,000 grand prize to the nonprofit with the highest amount of giving overall.
Five “No Place Like Home” prize awards of $5,000 to the nonprofit with the highest number of unique donors from Caroline, Fredericksburg, Stafford, etc.
An hourly $1,000 random award to participating nonprofits.

The Community Foundation does not charge donors or nonprofits to participate, but the company processing the online donations will charge an industry standard transaction fee.

All donations must be made online at www.thecommunitygive.org.  The Community Foundation promises all donors will receive an immediate thank you and a receipt for 100 percent of their donation.

“There has never been such an opportunity in the Fredericksburg area for the whole community to support the nonprofits of their choice within a 24-hour span,” Biever said.  A similar 2013 one-day event in Richmond resulted in 18,107 gifts and $1.5 million donated dollars, inclusive of incentive prizes, CFRRR said.
