Washington Heritage Museums (WHM) welcomed more than 30,000 visitors to its four properties in 2016, setting a new record and continuing a second year of growth.
“It’s an exciting achievement, and indicative of an increased interest in our nation’s history,” said WHM Executive Director Anne Darron. “I believe it’s also attributable to updated tours, appealing special events, engagement of the local community at public events, and an improved awareness of the museums.”
The group of museums in the City of Fredericksburg includes the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, Mary Washington House, Rising Sun Tavern, and St. James’ House.
Each of the buildings is connected to the family of George Washington. They were deeded to Washington Heritage Museums in 2012 as a gift from Preservation Virginia. Costumed interpreters provide tours 360 days a year to both individuals and groups, including school tours.
