From Virginia Tax

If you took advantage of the 6-month extension to file your Virginia individual income tax return, your 2016 return is due Wednesday, Nov. 1.

File electronically – easy, safe, and accurate

Electronic filing options include:

Free File: Free federal and state income tax filing software for taxpayers who meet income and other qualifiers. If you made $64,000 or less in 2016, you qualify to file both your federal and state return through free, easy-to-use tax preparation software.

Free Fillable Forms: Online version of the Virginia Form 760 resident return and schedules. It looks similar to the paper form and will do simple math calculations for you. Note: Fillable Forms closes for the year after Nov. 1, 2017. Make sure you print and file your return before the program closes. After Nov. 1, you will no longer be able to modify, print, or file your 2016 return.

Tax software for a fee: If you don’t qualify for free online filing options, you can still file your return electronically with the help of commercial tax preparation software

If you owe taxes, be sure to pay when you file. If you don’t, you will be charged interest, and you may have to pay a penalty.

Are you expecting a refund?

If you file your tax return electronically, your refund will generally be processed within 4 weeks.
If you file your tax return on paper, your refund will generally be processed within 8 weeks. If you mailed your tax return using certified mail, it could take up to 3 additional weeks.

Some taxpayers still have more time to file

Members of the military and others serving in combat zones receive the same filing and payment extensions granted by the IRS, plus an additional 15 days, or a 1-year extension, whichever date is later.
Members of the armed services deployed outside the United States are allowed a 90-day extension following the completion of deployment. See Military Tax Tips on our website for more information.
Taxpayers who were granted the federal foreign income exclusion also have additional time to file. See Individuals Living Abroad on our website.
