VDOT Hot Spots for October 22 – 28, 2017

Interstate 95 (Southern Terminus Extension Project)

Construction is underway to extend 95 Express Lanes in Stafford County. The approximate 2.5 mile extension will carry traffic beyond the flyover ramp where 95 Express Lanes currently end, just north of Exit 143/Route 610 (Garrisonville Road). Motorists should expect the following lane closures and delays:

Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville Road)

(New) Thursday, 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.  Expect double lane closure on I-95 northbound near Exit 143 to allow crews to uncover new signs.

 

Interstate 95 (Exit 140/Courthouse Road)

Work is underway on a project to improve the I-95 interchange at Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road). The project includes building a diverging diamond interchange at Exit 140, relocating the Courthouse Road and Route 1 intersection to the south to align with Hospital Center Boulevard, and widening Courthouse Road to four lanes from Cedar Lane to Ramoth Church Road.

Interstate 95 Southbound

(Update) Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. A single right lane on I-95 southbound will be closed near Exit 140 to allow crews to install temporary concrete barrier and crash cushions near the interchange. Expect brief delays. All lanes will re-open at 10 a.m. Friday.

 

Interstate 95 Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Work is underway to improve the deck and substructure on several bridges located on I-95 in Stafford and Spotsylvania.

Stafford County: I-95 Bridge over Aquia Creek at mile marker 145

The I-95 bridges over Aquia Creek are located just after Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville) at mile marker 145.

  • I-95 Northbound: Wednesday ˗˗ Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Expect a single, right lane closed.

Stafford County: I-95 Bridge over Potomac Creek at mile marker 137

The I-95 bridges over Potomac Creek are located just before Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) at mile marker 137.

  • I-95 Northbound: Monday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.

9 p.m. – one lane closed

10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed

All lanes re-open at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday

  • I-95 Southbound: Tuesday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.

9 p.m. – one lane closed

10 p.m. – 6 a.m. – two lanes closed

A single lane will remain closed from 6 a.m. ˗˗ 9 a.m.

Spotsylvania County: I-95 Bridge over Ni River at mile marker 121

The I-95 bridges over the Ni River are located just south of Exit 126/Massaponax at mile marker 121.   

I-95 Northbound: Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. ˗˗ 4:30 a.m.

9 p.m. –  one lane closed

10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed

All lanes re-open by 4:30 a.m. the following morning

I-95 Southbound: Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. ˗˗ 10 a.m. and Friday, 10 p.m. ˗˗ 6 a.m.

9 p.m. – one lane closed

10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed

4:30 a.m. – 10 a.m. one lane will remain closed until 10 a.m. the following morning, except on Saturday morning, when lanes will re-open by 6 a.m.

 

Interstate 95 Exit 130/Route 3/Fredericksburg Interchange Improvement Project

Construction is underway to improve safety on Interstate 95 and Route 3 at the Exit 130 interchange in Fredericksburg. Motorists should be prepared for the following lane closures, construction activity, and temporary traffic shifts on Route 3, I-95 at Exit 130 and/or Central Park shopping area.

Route 3 Westbound

(New) Sunday ˗˗ Tuesday, 10 p.m. ˗˗ 9 a.m. Expect a single lane on Route 3 westbound to be closed followed by a double lane closure at midnight near the I-95 interchange. Double lane closures will end at 7 a.m. A single lane will remain closed until 9 a.m. to allow crews to install a storm sewer crossing.

(New) Wednesday ˗˗ Friday, 10 p.m. ˗˗ 9 a.m.  A single, right lane will be closed on Route 3 westbound near the interchange.

Route 3 Eastbound

(New) Sunday ˗˗ Wednesday, 9 p.m. ˗˗ 4 a.m. A single, right lane will be closed on Route 3 eastbound near the interchange.

I-95 Southbound at Exit 130

(New) Wednesday ˗˗ Friday, 10 p.m. ˗˗ 9 a.m. The Exit 130 off-ramp will be reduced to a single lane from I-95 southbound to Route 3 westbound at Carl D. Silver Parkway. All lanes will reopen at 9 a.m. the following morning except on Friday at 6 a.m.

Carl D. Silver Parkway (Central Park Exit)

(New) Tuesday ˗˗ Friday, 10 p.m. ˗˗ 7 a.m. and Monday, Oct. 30 10 p.m. ˗˗ 7 a.m.  All southbound lanes on Carl D. Silver Parkway at Route 3 will be blocked for water line and storm sewer work. Traffic will not be permitted to exit the Central Park shopping area. Signs will guide traffic along the detour route from Trade Street to Central Park Boulevard.

 

Interstate 95 at Exit 118/Mudd Tavern Road Widening and Bridge Replacement Project

Crews are working to improve the interchange on Interstate 95 at Exit 118 (Mudd Tavern Road). The project will build a new I-95 overpass and improve on and off-ramps on Mudd Tavern Road, improve Mudd Tavern Road east of I-95, and Mallard Road.

Interstate 95 Northbound at Exit 118

(New) Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.  A single left lane will be closed at the interchange to allow crews to install temporary concrete barrier. Expect brief delays.

 

Stafford County Work Zones

Route 1 at Hospital Center Boulevard

(New) Monday – Wednesday, 5 a.m. – 2 p.m. Expect a single, right lane to be closed on Route 1 southbound from Hospital Center Boulevard to Wyche Road for turn lane construction. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 1 at Falmouth Bridge

(Update) Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Route 1 near the Falmouth Bridge over the Rappahannock River into the city of Fredericksburg to allow crews to inspect the bridge. Expect brief delays.

Route 218 (Butler Road)

(New) Thursday– Friday, 7 a.m. –  5 p.m.  Expect alternating, single lane closures on Butler Road between Chatham Heights Road and Cool Springs Road to allow crews to make repairs to the bridge over CSX railroad tracks.  Expect brief delays.

Route 610 (Garrisonville Road)

Sunday ˗˗ Friday, 8 p.m. ˗˗ 5 a.m.   Motorists can expect alternating single lane closures overnight on Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) from Shelton Shop Road to Furnace Road for a paving operation. Motorists may experience a rough travel surface and bumps. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. each morning.

Route 630 (Courthouse Road)

Monday ˗˗ Thursday,  8:30 a.m. ˗˗ 2 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. ˗˗ 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Courthouse Road between Cedar Lane and Monument Drive for clearing/trimming trees, installing concrete barrier and pipe work as part of the widening project. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone. Expect delays.

Routine Maintenance

Monday − Friday, 6 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

  • Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) – brush cutting
  • Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) – brush cutting
  • Route 607 (Deacon Road) ˗˗ debris pickup
  • Route 611 (Widewater Road) – shoulder repair
  • Route 624 (Layhill Road) ˗˗ ditch cleaning
  • Route 653 (Decatur Road) ˗˗ shoulder repairs

 

Spotsylvania County Work Zones

Route 1 Restriping

(New) Sunday ˗˗ Monday, 2 a.m. ˗ 3 p.m. Motorists should anticipate single lane closures on Route 1 near Old Telegraph Road, Southpoint Parkway and Lafayette Boulevard near Falcon Drive. Crews are restriping existing line markings on various roads. Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear.

Route 17

(Update) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Expect alternating single lane closures on southbound Route 17 (Mills Drive) near Robert E. Lee Drive, Massaponax Church Road and Jennings Lane for guardrail repair. Flaggers will direct drivers through the intersection and work zone. Expect brief delays.

Route 649 (Seays Road) CLOSED

Seays Road is closed to through traffic to replace a structurally deficient bridge over Glady Run.  The bridge is located between Robert E. Lee Drive and Mastin Lane.  A detour will be in place along the recommended detour route, which is approximately ten miles. The bridge is anticipated to be closed until mid-November 2017.

Route 721 (Grand Brooks Road)

(New) Monday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Grand Brooks Road for a paving operation. Expect brief delays.

Subdivision Street Paving

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 8 a.m .˗˗ 5 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations in several neighborhoods in the Lee’s Hill area off Mine Road for a paving operation. Crews will be paving in Watford Village, Cavalry Ridge and Lee’s Crossing subdivisions. This project will improve the ride for motorists and enhance the condition of the streets with new asphalt. Expect brief delays.

Routine Maintenance

Monday − Friday, 6 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

  • Route 17 (Mills Drive) – brush cutting
  • Route 208 Courthouse Road – pothole patching

 

Caroline County Work Zones

Route 301 Southbound

(Update) Monday − Tuesday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on southbound Route 301 near the bridge over Peumansend Creek to allow crews to install pavement markings and raised snow plow markers. Expect brief delays.

Secondary Route Paving

(New) Tuesday ˗˗ Thursday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations on various low-volume secondary routes throughout Caroline County for a paving operation. Motorists may experience a rough travel surface and bumps. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Monday − Friday, 6 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

  • Route 2 (Fredericksburg Turnpike – brush removal

  • Route 301 (A.P. Hill Boulevard) – ditch cleaning
  • Route 301 (Richmond Turnpike) – brush cutting

Essex County Work Zones

Route 17

(New) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Expect a single, right lane to be closed on southbound Route 17 near the Occupacia Road intersection for guardrail repair. Expect brief delays.

(Update) Monday ˗˗ Wednesday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Route 17 at the bridge over Mt. Landing Creek for repairs to the bridge. Expect brief delays near the bridge approaches.

(New) Wednesday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 3 p.m. Expect single, alternating lane closures on southbound Route 17 near Johnville Road and Boston Road for utility and permit work. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 360

(Update) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on westbound Route 360 near the Essex and King and Queen counties line and Gordon Mill Road to allow crews to install pavement markings. Expect brief delays.

 

Gloucester County Work Zones

Route 17

(New) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 a.m. ˗˗ 1 p.m. Expect a single, right lane to be closed on Route 17 near Main Street for utility and permit work. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 602 (Burkes Pond Road)

(New) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Expect single, alternating lane closures on Burkes Pond Road near the bridge for guardrail repair. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Route 610  (Salem Church Road)

(New) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Expect single, alternating lane closures on Salem Church Road near the Cedar Lake Bridge for guardrail repair. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Secondary Route Paving and Restriping

(New) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations on various routes throughout Gloucester County. Crews are restriping existing line markings on various roads. Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear. Route 604 (Dabneys Mill Road)

(New) Monday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Dabneys Mill Road for a paving operation. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

King William County Restriping

(Update) Saturday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations on various routes throughout King William County.  Crews are restriping existing line markings on various roads. Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. Lancaster County Work Zone

Route 3

(New) Monday, 7:30 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Expect a single, right lane to be closed on Route 3 near Courthouse Road for utility and permit work. Crews will be replacing utility poles. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 201 (White Chapel Road)

(New) Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on Route 201 (White Chapel Road) near Old Bethel Road for guardrail repair. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Lancaster County/Middlesex County Work Zone

Route 3 and Robert O. Norris Bridge

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 a.m. ˗˗ 3 p.m. Drivers on Route 3 crossing the Norris Bridge should expect delays as crews make structural steel repairs in conjunction with the painting project. Drivers will encounter one-way, alternating traffic on the bridge controlled by automatic flagging stations. The temporary traffic signals on the bridge will be placed in flash mode during the work zone.

 

Mathews County Work Zone

Route 14

(New) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Expect single, alternating lane closures on Route 14 near the Route 3 intersection for guardrail repair. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

 

Middlesex County Work Zone

Route 17

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Expect single, alternating lane closures on northbound Route 17 near Mt. Zion Road to install pavement markings and raised snow plow markers. Expect brief delays.

 

Northumberland County Work Zone

Route 360 at Academic Lane

Monday ˗˗ Friday,  8:30 a.m. ˗˗ 3 p.m. Motorists can expect alternating, single lane closures and flagging operations at the intersection of Route 360 (Northumberland Highway) and Academic Lane as work continues to improve and widen the intersection.

 

Richmond County Work Zone

Route 360 Eastbound near the Downing Bridge

(Update) Monday − Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on eastbound Route 360 near the Downing Bridge to Newland Road for a paving operation. Motorists may experience a rough travel surface and bumps.  Expect brief delays.

Route 612 (Oakland Road)

(New) Monday − Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expect single, alternating lane closures on Oakland Road near the Millpond Road intersection for guardrail repair. Flaggers will direct drivers through the intersection. Expect brief delays.

 

Westmoreland County Work Zones

Westmoreland County Restriping

(Update) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations on various primary and secondary routes throughout Westmoreland County.  Crews are restriping existing line markings on various roads. Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear.

Route 642 (Baynesville Road) CLOSED

Baynesville Road is closed to through traffic to allow crews to replace a structurally deficient bridge over the Big Swamp. The bridge is located between Rt. 3 (Kings Highway) and Route 691 (Northernmost Road). A detour is in place along the recommended detour, which is approximately nine miles to include Flat Iron Road and Route 3. The bridge is anticipated to remain closed through mid-November 2017.
