Interstate 95 at Exit 118/Mudd Tavern Road Widening and Bridge Replacement Project

Crews are working to improve the interchange on Interstate 95 at Exit 118 (Mudd Tavern Road). The project will build a new I-95 overpass and improve on and off-ramps on Mudd Tavern Road, improve Mudd Tavern Road east of I-95, and Mallard Road.

Crews will be lifting concrete beams into place at the new Mudd Tavern Road overpass each evening on May 29 – May 31.  Double lane closures are scheduled at night, with 30-minute full traffic stops between midnight and 5 a.m. I-95 travelers are encouraged to use Route 1 or Route 301 to avoid delays on these evenings.

Interstate 95 Southbound

(Update) Tuesday – Wednesday9:30 p.m.  – 5 a.m. Expect a single lane to be closed at 9:30 p.m. on I-95 southbound followed by double lane closures at 10 p.m. Between midnight and 5 a.m., all traffic will be stopped several times for approximately 30 minutes each time, while crews lift concrete beams over the interstate. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following morning.

Interstate 95 Northbound

(Update) Tuesday9:30 p.m.  – 5 a.m. Expect a single lane to be closed at 9:30 p.m. followed by double lane closures at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m.

(Update) Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.  – 3:30 p.m. Expect a single lane to be closed on I-95 northbound near the interchange to allow crews to stage equipment and materials needed for the overnight beam lifts.

(Update) Wednesday – Thursday9:30 p.m.  – 5 a.m. Expect a single lane to be closed at 9:30 p.m. on I-95 northbound followed by double lane closures at 10 p.m. Between midnight and 5 a.m., all traffic will be stopped several times for approximately 30 minutes each while crews lift concrete beams over the interstate. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following morning.

During the stoppages, traffic will be detoured to take the exit ramp, directed across Mudd Tavern Road, and guided onto the entrance ramp back to the interstate.

Message boards on I-95 will provide advance notice of lane closures and detour routes. Traffic signals along these routes will be timed to accommodate increased traffic volumes. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control.

Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road)

Tuesday – Thursday9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) at the I-95 overpass for interchange and bridge project construction and storm sewer installation. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

(Update) Tuesday – Thursday, 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. Expect flagging operations on Mudd Tavern Road at the I-95 overpass.

Mallard Road

Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Mallard Road for project construction and storm sewer installation. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone.

Interstate 95 Exit 130/Route 3/Fredericksburg Interchange Improvement Project

Construction is underway to modify the ramps and traffic pattern at the Interstate 95 and Route 3 (Exit 130) interchange in Fredericksburg to enhance safety. Motorists will encounter the following lane closures near Route 3, I-95 at Exit 130 and/or the Central Park shopping area.

Route 3 Eastbound at Carl D. Silver Parkway

(New) Tuesday – Friday10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Tuesday – Friday9 p.m. – 4 a.m. Expect a single lane to be closed on Route 3 eastbound near the Exit 130 interchange.

Route 3 Westbound at Carl D. Silver Parkway

(Update) Tuesday – Friday10 p.m. – 9 a.m. Expect overnight single lane closures throughout the week for median work. Expect brief delays.

Interstate 95 Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Work is underway to improve the deck and substructure on several bridges located on I-95 in Stafford and Spotsylvania.

Stafford County: I-95 Bridge over Aquia Creek at mile marker 145

The I-95 bridges over Aquia Creek are located just after Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville) at mile marker 145.

  • I-95 Southbound

Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 7 a.m.

    • 9 p.m. – single lane closed
    • 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
    • 4 – 7 a.m. – single lane closed

Stafford County: I-95 Bridge over Potomac Creek at mile marker 137

The I-95 bridges over Potomac Creek are located near Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) at mile marker 137. Drivers can expect lane closures at the following dates and times:

I-95 Northbound:

Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.

  • 9 p.m. – single lane closed
  • 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
  • 4:30 a.m. All lanes open the following morning

I-95 Southbound:

Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 7 a.m.

  • 9 p.m. – single lane closed
  • 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
  • 4 – 7 a.m. – single lane closed (All lanes open at 6 a.m. on Friday)

Interstate 95 (Exit 140/Courthouse Road)

Work is underway to improve the I-95 interchange at Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road). The project includes building a diverging diamond interchange at Exit 140, relocating the Courthouse Road and Route 1 intersection to the south to align with Hospital Center Boulevard, and widening Courthouse Road to four lanes from Cedar Lane to Ramoth Church Road.

Interstate 95 Southbound

(Update) Tuesday – Thursday9 p.m. – 7 a.m. Expect alternating single lane closures for a mobile work zone near the Exit 140 interchange to allow crews to repair temporary concrete barriers.

Interstate 95 Northbound

(Update) Tuesday – Thursday9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Expect alternating single lane closures for a mobile work zone near the Exit 140 interchange to allow crews to repair temporary concrete barriers.

Route 630 (Courthouse Road)

Tuesday – Thursday8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. –12 p.m. Courthouse Road will be reduced to one lane from Austin Ridge Drive to Red Oak Drive. Crews will be working near the I-95/Exit 140 interchange.

Tuesday – Thursday8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Friday8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Courthouse Road between Cedar Lane and Walpole Street for grading and pipe work as part of the widening project.

Ramoth Church Road

Tuesday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Friday8:30 a.m. –12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Ramoth Church Road from Courthouse Road to Dog Patch Lane for grading and pipe work. Flaggers will direct drivers in the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Reids Road

Tuesday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. ˗˗ 2 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. ˗ 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Reids Road to allow trucks to enter and exit the work zone.

Snowbird Lane

Tuesday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. ˗˗ 2 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. ˗ 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Snowbird Lane.

Winding Creek Road

(Update) Tuesday – Thursday, 9 ˗˗ 2 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. ˗ 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Winding Creek Road from Courthouse Road to Embrey Mill Road for pipe work.

Woodcutters Road

Tuesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. ˗˗ 2 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. ˗ 12 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Woodcutters Road between Courthouse Road and Cutstone Drive.

Wyche Road

Tuesday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Wyche Road at Courthouse Road to allow trucks to enter and exit the work zone.

Stafford County Work Zones

Interstate 95 Northbound at Rappahannock River Bridge

(New) Tuesday – Wednesday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Expect a single lane to close on I-95 northbound at the bridge over the Rappahannock River for bridge repairs. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. The bridge is located at mile marker 132, which is just before Exit 133/Falmouth.

Route 17 at Exit 133/Falmouth

(Update) Tuesday – Friday, Route 17 northbound and southbound will be reduced to two lanes in each direction at the I-95 overpasses to allow crews to take soil samples for the upcoming Interstate 95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project. The merge lane for vehicles entering and exiting I-95 underneath the bridges will be shifted inside by a single lane. Work zone signs and barrels will guide motorists through the work zone. Drivers are asked to use additional caution in this area as they navigate the work zone. Brief delays may occur at peak hours due to the reduction in travel lanes.

  • Northbound

o   Tuesday – Thursday, 6 a.m. – 5 p.m.

o   Friday, All lanes will reopen by noon

  • Southbound

o   Tuesday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Construction on the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing begins in late summer 2018.

Route 17 at Melcher Drive

(New) Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures with flagging operations on Route 17 near Melcher Drive for guardrail repair. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 630 (Courthouse Road)

(New) Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures with flagging operations on Route 630/Courthouse Road near Route 1 for guardrail repair. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 753 (Enon Road)

(New) Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures with flagging operations on Route 753/Enon Road near Wyatt Lane for guardrail repair. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 1706 (Plantation Drive)

(New) Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Route 1706/Plantation Drive near Lyons Boulevard for guardrail repair. Flaggers will direct drivers in the work zone.  Expect brief delays.

Route 218

(Update) Tuesday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Expect flagging operations on Route 218/White Oak Road between Route 606/Ferry Road in Stafford County and Route 600/Passapatansy Road in King George County for guardrail repair. Flaggers will alternate, one-way traffic at various locations along Route 218 in the mobile work zone. Expect brief daytime delays near the work zone.

Spotsylvania County Work Zone

Interstate 95 Southbound at Exit 126/Massaponax

(New) Wednesday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Expect a single lane to close on I-95 southbound near Exit 126/Massaponax at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. Crews continue repairs to the I-95 bridge over Route 1.

Route 1 Northbound and Southbound at Market Street

Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Expect mobile single lane closures on Route 1 northbound and southbound between Route 1486 (Market Street) and Fredericksburg City limits for milling and paving work. Expect temporary rough pavement and brief delays near the work zone. Virginia State Police assisting with traffic control.

Route 1 Northbound and Southbound at Telegraph Road

(Update) Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Expect mobile single lane closures on Route 1 northbound and southbound between Telegraph Road and Southpoint Parkway for paving work. Expect brief delays near the mobile work zone.

Route 3 Westbound

(New) Wednesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Expect mobile single lane closures on Route 3 westbound between Spotswood Furnace Rd. and Corter Road to allow crews to install pavement markings. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 601 (Lawyers Road)

(New) Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures with flagging operations on Route 601/Lawyers Road near Route 653 (Powells Road) for guardrail repair. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 609 (Jim Morris Road)

Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Route 609 (Jim Morris Road) between Route 17 (Mills Drive) and Patriot Lane for pipe work. Access to driveways will be maintained for residents who live in this section of Jim Morris Road. Flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Route 628 (Spotsylvania Parkway)

(Update) Wednesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Expect mobile single lane closures on Route 628 (Spotsylvania Parkway) between Route 1 and Leavells Road for milling and paving work. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 636 (Mine Road)

(Update) Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Expect mobile single lane closures on Route 636 (Mine Road) between Route 1 and Falcon Drive for paving. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

Route 673 (Piedmont Drive)

(New) Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures with flagging operations on Route 673 (Piedmont Drive) near North Fawn Circle and Royal Oaks Drive for guardrail repair. Expect brief delays near the work zone.

City of Fredericksburg Work Zone

Route 3 Eastbound On-Ramp to I-95 Southbound

(New) Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. The Exit 130 on-ramp which carries traffic from eastbound Route 3 to southbound I-95 will be slightly narrowed to allow crews to take soil samples.  The ramp will remain OPEN. Drivers should be alert to construction crews and equipment working along the shoulder of the ramp.

Caroline County Work Zones

Routine Maintenance

Tuesday − Friday, 6 a.m. –2:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

Route 301 at Rappahannock River (James Madison Bridge)

Tuesday − Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane on Route 301 northbound and southbound near the James Madison Bridge over the Rappahannock River for a bridge maintenance project. Expect brief delays on the bridge and at the bridge approaches.

King George County Work Zone

Route 301 (James Madison Parkway)

(New) Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Expect alternating single lane closures on Route 301 (James Madison Parkway) at various locations including Route 617 (Poplar Neck Road), Sunset Lane and Davis Drive for guardrail repair. Expect brief delays near the work zones.
