Signal adjustments, lane shift coming tonight near Central Park

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will adjust the traffic signals and install new pavement markings at the Route 3 westbound and Carl D. Silver Parkway intersection in Fredericksburg tonight to provide additional space between the right turn lanes and new Interstate 95 southbound slip ramp.

Tonight, motorists should anticipate single and double lane closures starting at 9 p.m. on Route 3 westbound between the I-95 interchange at Exit 130 and Carl D. Silver Parkway. All lanes will re-open by 4:30 a.m. Thursday, July 12.

Crews will add an additional 12 feet of space between the Route 3 westbound right turn lanes and the slip ramp from I-95 southbound to Carl D. Silver Parkway. New pavement markings applied overnight will reflect the increased separation between the lanes.

After the lanes are shifted farther apart, drivers approach the traffic signals at an improved angle. Motorists turning right onto Carl D. Silver Parkway will have improved visibility of the traffic signals at the intersection.

Next week, new concrete curbing and an extended concrete median be added overnight to provide additional separation between the Route 3 westbound turn lanes and the slip ramp.

Route 3 and Carl D. Silver Parkway Lane Closures Next Week

Weather permitting, the following lane closures are scheduled overnight next week between 9:30 p.m. – 7 a.m. to allow construction crews to extend the concrete median at the intersection:

Monday, July 16 − Thursday, July 19

I-95 Southbound Off-Ramp to Carl D. Silver Parkway (Slip Ramp Full Closure)

The separate, free-flow lane from I-95 southbound to Carl D. Silver Parkway, also known as the slip ramp, will be closed from 9:30 p.m. – 7 a.m. on Monday through Thursday evenings.

Drivers seeking to access the Central Park shopping area should use Exit 130B and enter the triple right turn lanes to turn right onto Route 3 westbound.

Route 3 Westbound to Carl D. Silver Parkway

The Route 3 westbound right turn lane to Carl D. Silver Parkway, next to the slip ramp, will be closed overnight from 9:30 p.m. – 7 a.m. on Monday through Thursday evenings. The outer right turn lane will remain open.

Carl D. Silver Parkway (Central Park main entrance and exit)

A single northbound and southbound lane on Carl D. Silver Parkway will be closed between 9:30 p.m. – 7 a.m. on Monday through Thursday evenings. Two lanes will remain open in each direction.

About the Project

Construction is underway on a $21 million project to improve safety and enhance operations at Exit 130 in Fredericksburg.

This project is modifying the on- and off-ramps at the Route 3 interchange to reduce vehicle merging and weaving that can lead to crashes, injuries and congestion. Improvements are being funded with federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds.

Construction began in July 2017 and is scheduled to be completed by January 2019.

In late summer and fall 2018, motorists will observe construction underway along Route 3 eastbound and in the median of Route 3. Crews are working to build triple left turn lanes to the I-95 northbound on-ramp.
