From Friends of Wilderness and Battlfield

On Saturday, August 25, National Park Service Historian Greg Mertz will lead a day long canoe tour of Civil War sites along the Rapidan River. Greg’s narration will bring to life such notables as Stonewall Jackson, George Custer and J.E.B. Stuart. The trip will afford you the opportunity to visit the historic crossing sites on the river, many that are not accessible by land.

This will be a long day on the water and, as General Grant would say, “There is no turning back.” Bring a lunch, your cooler, sunscreen, wipes, meds and anything else you think you might need. The terrain at Germanna for the put in is rugged and possibly damp so be prepared. We will depart Ely’s Ford at 8:30 AM, be transported to Germanna, and float back to Ely’s Ford, arriving about 3:00 PM.

The group is limited to 15 canoes or 29 participants, plus Greg. This is a fund raising effort for FoWB and the cost of the day is $50 per person, with FoWB receiving about half that amount. If you wish to be paired with a particular person please let us know that when you sign up.

Everyone must register on the website where you will have the option to pay by credit card, Pay Pal, or mail in a check. Payment must be received prior to the day of the event. We will not be able to accept payment on the day of the trip.
