Actress and producer Bellamy Young and former Undersecretary of State Judith McHale were in Fredericksburg August 26, 2016, to campaign for Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine on Women’s Equality Day, which commemorates the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote.
The women spoke at a campaign volunteer appreciation event and a Women for Hillary House Party.
“The state of Virginia is really critical for this election, and while the numbers are looking really good right now, we can’t count on anything,” McHale told campaign volunteers at the Fredericksburg office of Hillary for America, 313 Central Rd. McHale served as Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs under then Secretary of State Clinton.
“I saw her [Hillary Clinton] literally around the world — in 70 countries in two and a half years — and she would always talk about how important it is to engage with people and really listen, even if they are angry,” McHale said. “I saw how women around the world respect and admire her. I’m incredibly passionate about what she can and will do as President.”
Young, who plays former first lady Mellie Grant on ABC’s hit show “Scandal,” thanked the volunteers for their work. “What matters the most is what’s happening in this room,” Young said.
“The candidate on the other side does not respect or advocate for women,” said Amanda Rush, an organizer for the Democratic Party of Virginia. “Hillary Clinton supports equal pay for women, a woman’s right to choose, and paid family leave.”
“There are too many people that believe bad things about Hillary Clinton,” said volunteer Judy Lawrence. The Spotsylvania resident said she’s been volunteering for the Democratic Party since John F. Kennedy. “This is the worst campaign I’ve ever seen, because there are no facts involved in what Donald Trump says, and people believe him. People should look at her [Hillary Clinton’s] record, not at the stuff the Republicans are throwing out.”
“We have to work just as hard for the candidates lower on the ballot, to get them elected so we can get the job done once Hillary is elected,” Spotsylvania resident Jennifer Fredrick told those gathered. She and her 16-year-old daughter Kegan are volunteering with the campaign. Kegan, a sophomore at Riverbend High School, is a voter registration captain.
