When American artist Gari and his wife Corinne purchased the Falmouth, Va., property in 1916, they added their own touches to the existing grounds and gardens. Many of these followed the Colonial Revival Movement, the architectural and decorating style popular at the time.
Cultural Resources Manager Beate Johnson has worked for 16 years to restore the gardens to the time of the Melchers. On Sunday, April 26, 2015, she will present a lecture about the Colonial Revival Movement. The illustrated presentation will focus on the influence the Colonial Revival had on Gari and Corinne, and how it is expressed in Belmont’s house and gardens. The 2 p.m. presentation is free. Tours of the home and studio require regular admission.
Curator Joanna Catron will present an illustrated lecture at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, called “The Painted Garden: A Favorite Motif in American Impressionism.” The talk is scheduled as part of the special exhibit of Gari Melchers’ painting “The Crimson Rambler.” The privately owned painting is on loan to Belmont through June 7, 2015. The 2 p.m. presentation is free. Tours of the home and studio require regular admission.
