Members of the Fredericksburg Sister City Association (FSCA) traveled to Fréjus in southeastern France in September 2015, to commemorate their 35th year as sister cities.

The weeklong celebration began September 10 with a reception for Fredericksburg and Fréjus sister city members, sponsored by le Comité de Jumelage et les Artistes et Artisans du Circuit des Métiers d’art.

FSCA President Bill Beck and Fréjus Jumelage President Philippe Rigoulot reaffirmed the sister city partnership at an event on September 12. Both communities exchanged gifts.

Other highlights of the trip included a commemoration of Sept. 11, 2001, with a speech from Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw.

French and American participants cracked 13,500 eggs for the Grande Fete de l’Omelette Géante, or the Giant Omelet, on September 13.

FSCA members will recount the trip at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Snowden House, 2600 Mary Washington Blvd., Fredericksburg.

Andréa Livi Smith, chair of the University of Mary Washington’s Department of Historic Preservation and a Paris native, will also present on her extensive knowledge on Paris bridges in “Bridges and Viaducts of Paris.”

The meeting will also include a recap of the Summer Student Exchange and elections of new board members.

The Fredericksburg Sister City Association was founded in 1980 and has since hosted annual student exchanges, with students from Fréjus coming to Fredericksburg in even-numbered years and students from Fredericksburg traveling to Fréjus in odd-numbered years.

Fredericksburg also has sister city relationships with Schwetzingen, Germany, and Prince’s Town, Ghana.
