Karen Hedelt, director of Economic Development and Tourism for the City of Fredericksburg, is retiring effective August 1, 2016.

Hedelt began with the department in 1981 as a media liaison, and was promoted from interim to permanent director in 2009.

“My titles and duties have changed through the years, but I have found public service to be most interesting and very rewarding,” Hedelt said. “I plan to take some time for myself, and then I likely will look for a new role that is significantly different than what I am doing now.”

Hedelt is a graduate of Lynchburg College with a B.A. in English Literature/Writing. In 2010 she was named a Woman of Distinction for Civic Affairs by the Girl Scouts of the Virginia, and received the 2008 Historic Fredericksburg Foundation Lillian D. Reed Volunteer Award. She is a past president of the Fredericksburg Public Relations Society.

Hedelt said she does not have information about the process for finding the next director. “I would assume our new City Manager, Tim Baroody, will be deciding how to proceed,” she said. Baroody begins his tenure as city manager on June 27, 2016.
