Salem Church Library is hosting a Halloween Costume Swap from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014.

“This event provides participants the opportunity to exchange their gently used costumes for ones that are new to them,” said Lena Gonzalez Berrios, branch manager. “Buying new Halloween costumes each year is expensive, so we’re excited to provide the Halloween Costume Swap as a money-saving, green alternative to our customers.”

Costume donations will be accepted during library hours 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Oct. 6 – 9; 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10; and  9 – 10 a.m. on the day of the swap.  Customers should bring their costume(s) to the children’s desk at Salem Church Library.

Each person contributing a complete children’s costume to the swap will receive a voucher, which will indicate the number of gently-used, complete costumes donated.  This voucher will be used to choose a costume(s) on swap day.

Only children’s costumes, infant through school-aged sizes are eligible for a voucher. Teen and adult costumes can be donated, but will not receive a voucher.

Costumes cannot be returned to their original owners once they’ve been given to the library. “Hopefully, everyone who contributes to the swap will find a new costume to love, but just in case, all participants should know their old costumes will be treated as true (aka non-returnable) donations to benefit the library, our customers and a worthy community organization,” Berrios said.  Any items left over will be donated to a local shelter for women and children.

All donated costumes should be “gently-used”:  Stain-free, tear-free and clean. This will ensure that the costumes available on swap day are in good, wearable condition.  “We want the swap to be as fair and helpful to all our customers as possible,” Berrios said.

Incomplete costumes and props may be donated to the swap, but will not count towards a voucher.  This will help ensure there are enough complete costumes to go around on swap day.

Children are welcome to browse the swap with their grown-ups, but childcare is not provided.

Salem Church Library is located at 2607 Salem Church Rd. in Fredericksburg.
