Overnight work to improve sidewalk and railing conditions on Chatham Bridge over the Rappahannock River between Stafford County and Fredericksburg is scheduled to begin Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017.

Repairs are anticipated to take four weeks to complete. The first week of work will run 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. through Thursday, Feb. 23, weather permitting.

One lane of Route 3 Business will always remain open to traffic in each direction while work is underway. Drivers will be able to cross the bridge and travel between Stafford and Fredericksburg at all times.

Pedestrian access will also be maintained. During the day, sidewalks on both sides of the bridge will remain open. Overnight, the contractor may close one sidewalk to perform repairs, but one sidewalk will always remain open.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and its contractor are restoring a smooth concrete surface on deteriorated sections of sidewalk. Additionally, the contractor will replace 55 posts along the bridge railing, and also restore areas of deteriorated concrete.

Crews will also perform a permanent bridge deck repair in the eastbound right lane, where a secured steel plate is covering a hole.
