“Taming the Wilderness” Living History Event at Ellwood Manor

Craftsmen, artisans and living historians will demonstrate aspects of life in the late 1700 through early 1800s during historic Ellwood Manor’s Taming the Wilderness living history event on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016.

The event will be held rain or shine from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Demonstrations will highlight the building trades and homemaking skills related to the construction of historic Ellwood and the settling of the Wilderness.

In addition to the ongoing living history, several talks and tours pertaining to the Civil War will be offered at specific times.

At 11 a.m. historian Brad Gottfried will discuss his book “The Maps of the Wilderness”, an atlas depicting each phase of the Battle of the Wilderness. The talk will be followed by a book signing. Eastern National bookstore will be selling his book, along with other titles pertaining to Wilderness Battlefield.

Friends of Wilderness Battlefield volunteers will conduct guided walking tours of the Wilderness Crossing Trail at 12 p.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sturdy shoes, water, and bug spray are recommended for this 75-minute program.

The Ellwood house will also be open for tours from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Friends of Wilderness Battlefield volunteers will be available in the heritage program tent to assist visitors with possible ancestral connections with the Battle of the Wilderness or Ellwood.
