National Capitol Squadron Open Hanger Day
Saturday, Aug. 27, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Culpeper Regional Airport, 12499 Beverly Ford Rd., Brandy Station, Va.
Visit the hangar/museum building equipped for the maintenance and display of a fleet of aircraft known as the Ghost Squadron.
Free.

National Park Service Centennial Open House
Saturday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Chatham Manor, 120 Chatham Lane, Fredericksburg.
Hands-on activities, including demonstrations of historic preservation techniques and the opportunity for a closer look at some of the park’s artifacts. Meet a park law enforcement ranger and check out their gear, or talk to a park historian about what makes Chatham so special. Enjoy a slice of birthday cake.

Jackie Robinson’s Daughter to Speak at Sunshine Ballpark
Saturday, Aug. 27, 10 a.m.
Sunshine Ballpark, 1200 Wicklow Dr., Fredericksburg.
Sharon Robinson will talk about her dad, baseball, and her dad’s relevance to children today.

Hands On History at Montpelier
Saturday, Aug. 27, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Once Upon Our Walls. The Madisons decorated several of Montpelier’s rooms with fashionable “paper hangings,” or wallpaper. Learn how wallpaper was created in the 19th century, and design and print your own pattern to take home. Located at the back lawn of the house.
$7 – $20. Kids through age 14 are free.

Commemoration of Mary Washington’s Death
Saturday, Aug. 27, 5 – 7 p.m.
Wreath laying at The Mary Washington Monument, 1500 Washington Ave., Fredericksburg,
Reception at Mary Washington House, 1200 Charles St., Fredericksburg.
Honor the life of a remarkable woman with a wreath laying at her monument and a reception at her home.

Swing Dance
Saturday, Aug. 27, 7:30 p.m.
DanceFXBG at Dance Trance, 1145 Jefferson Davis Hwy. Fredericksburg.
Intro swing dance lesson 7:30 – 8 p.m.
Dancing 8 – 11 p.m.
No partner needed. All ages welcome. Children 14 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Light refreshments.

Gold Panning
Sunday, Aug. 28, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Lake Anna State Park, 6800 Lawyers Rd., Spotsylvania, Va. — Meet at the Visitor Center.
Learn some of the techniques of professional prospectors and then dip your pan in Old Pond to see what washes up. Please pre-register. Limit 15.

Geocaching 101
Sunday, Aug. 28, 12 – 2 p.m.
Caledon State Park, 11617 Caledon Rd.., King George, Va. 22485
Meet at the Visitor Center to check out the sport of Geocaching. Use a hand held Global Positioning System to find hidden containers in the park. It’s the high tech global scavenger hunt. This is a great family or group activity. GPS units provided.

Belmont Guided Woodland Hike
Sunday, August 28, 2 p.m.
Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont, 224 Washington St., Fredericksburg.
Conducted by Virginia Master Naturalists, these informative walks cover a mile of trails in both woodlands and fields and also touch on the historic ruins of Belmont’s past. Please wear sturdy footwear. Meet outside the Visitor Center.
