UMW Women’s Basketball CAC Semifinal
Thursday, Feb. 23, 7 p.m. in Ron Rosner Arena, University of Mary Washington
The 19th ranked University of Mary Washington women’s basketball team will host 25th ranked Marymount University.
Tickets for Thursday’s game are $10 for reserved seat backs and $5 for general admission.

Our Stories: Post WWII through the Civil Rights Era

A panel of community members from our area – Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania, and Westmoreland – will share their experiences that parallel, in ways both large and small, those of the women profiled in the book, Hidden Figures, our Rappahannock Reads selection. How were the challenges, obstacles, and opportunities encountered by four trailblazing African American women mathematicians at NASA also a reflection of the lives of local African Americans in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s?

Great Lives Lecture: George Custer, by T. J. Stiles
Thursday, Feb. 23, 7:30 p.m. at the University of Mary Washington’s George Washington Hall, Dodd Auditorium, 1301 College Ave.
Each lecture concludes with an audience question and answer session with the speaker, and a book signing. Free.

Fredericksburg Sister City Association Mardi Gras Celebration
Friday, Feb. 24, 6 – 10 p.m. at Dorothy Hart Community Center, 408 Canal St.
Members of any sister city organization can purchase tickets at the members’ rate of $35. It’s $45 for nonmembers. Proceeds support FSCA’s programs, including its student exchange.

Princess Parties 10th Anniversary Royal Ball
Friday, Feb. 24, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at
This event for children features professional singing and dancing, cupcakes, professional photography, and seven princesses ready to meet and greet and give hugs.
$10 per child. All proceeds will go to Joy to the Kids, a charity that gives joy to hospitalized children through character visits to promote spiritual healing.

The Vagina Monologues
Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25 at 8 p.m. at Picker’s Alley Black Box Theatre, 902 Caroline St. second floor. Enter through the alley.
Fredericksburg Theatre Ensemble presents “The Vagina Monologues.” Admission is by donations at the door, with all proceeds directly to the Rappahannock Council Against Sexual Assault (RCASA).

Ellwood Manor Volunteer Training
Saturday, Feb. 25, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Ellwood Manor, 36380 Constitution Hwy. (Route 20), Locust Grove, VA
Friends of Wilderness Battlefield (FoWB) is seeking new volunteers to staff positions at Ellwood Manor for the 2017 season. FoWB, in conjunction with the National Park Service, will provide a training session for new volunteers who are interested in becoming interpreters. Garden Work Day

Help with early spring tasks, including clearing, cleaning, compost bin renewing, organizing, plant bed preparing, mulch moving and more.
Free.

Downtown Culpeper Carnival
Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Downtown Culpeper Carnival is an all day Mardi Gras celebration for the entire family. There will be live music, street performances, wagon rides, New Orleans inspired food, face painting, and mask decorating. Enjoy the traditions of Mardi Gras with beads and masks for all.

6th Annual STEM Summit
Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Massaponax High School, 8201 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Fredericksburg, VA 22407
The 2017 STEM Summit is designed to bring together students, teachers, public officials, and businesses from the Fredericksburg Region to see STEM in action. The summit is open to the public. Admission is free. Sponsored by the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce

Kitchen Table Stories: Graveyards, Genealogies and the Next Generation
Saturday, Feb. 25, 2 – 4 p.m. at the duPont Library at Stratford Hall, 483 Great House Rd., Stratford, VA 22558
Rooted in the African-American experience are memories of time spent in the kitchen. Kitchen Table Stories is a yearly offering of oral histories gathered from the African American communities in the Northern Neck.
The program is free to the public. Any donations will be accepted.
