Jeremy Lynch of Springfield, Va., was the men’s overall winner in the 2014 Dean Ridings Memorial 5K on October 11, with a time of 16:22. He averaged a 5:16 mile, according to official race results.

Overall women’s winner was Carlyn Campbell of Fredericksburg. She finished in 26:03, an 8:23 mile average.

The annual race, sponsored by the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, raises funds and awareness for Special Olympics Virginia, and honors one of its own who died in the line of duty. Deputy Dean Ridings was killed in a boating accident on June 19, 2010, while on marine patrol on Lake Anna. The former Marine had served for six years with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office. Both of Riding’s sons currently are deputies with the department.

The race was part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, one of the largest grassroots fundraising endeavors for Special Olympics Virginia.
