11 Tips for A Car Emergency Kit

by | Nov 17, 2014 | Weather

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) has a video with tips for making a car emergency kit you can use when you’re stranded for any reason, including winter weather. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money,” VDEM advises. “Look around at what you already have.”

Your kit should include:

1 – A few bottles of water and some non-perishable food.
2 – A written list of emergency contacts.
3 – A flashlight and batteries.
4 – A whistle to blow to get attention.
5 – Rain gear, such as a poncho and umbrella.
6 – Cold weather gear, including mittens or gloves, socks, a cap and hand warmers.
7 – A blanket or two.
8 – An ice scraper.
9 – Kitty litter or sand, for more traction in snow or on ice.
10 – Windshield wiper fluid with deicer.
11 – Paper towels, toilet paper and hand wipes.
