A Fredericksburg man vacationing on North Carolina’s Outer Banks died when a beach tunnel he was digging collapsed on him.

Family members and others on the Cape Hatteras Island beach south of Salvo tried to uncover David Frasier, but he was buried too deep, National Park Service spokesperson Cyndy Holda told the Associated Press.

Authorities said the 49-year-old was buried under six feet of sand while digging a tunnel to connect two large holes.  It took rescuers 15-minutes to free Frasier, but he was already dead, Holda said.
