Fredericksburg Unemployment Rate Up, Highest in Last Year

The civilian labor force unemployment rate in Fredericksburg is at 6.0 percent, according to August 2014 local unemployment statistics released October 1 by the Virginia Employment Commission.  The number is not seasonally adjusted.  It’s the highest unemployment rate for the city between July 2013 and August 2014.

Virginia’s unemployment rate is at 5.7 percent.  The nation is at 6.3 percent.

Fredericksburg’s number is higher than its closest neighbors, Spotsylvania and Stafford, and lower than King George and Caroline counties.

Spotsylvania County – 5.4 percent unemployed
Stafford County – 5.2 percent unemployed
Caroline County – 6.4 percent unemployed
King George County – 6.6 percent unemployed

Job Reductions in Fredericksburg
Two of Fredericksburg’s largest employers recently enforced staff reductions.  The University of Mary Washington initiated a hiring freeze in September, and Mary Washington Healthcare in September laid-off 66 workers, reduced the hours of 46, and reassigned 157 in continued cost saving efforts.
