Mary Washington Healthcare (MWH) will provide free screenings for Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2014.

Vascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the United States. One of the common warning signs is leg pain caused by Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), a sign of arteriosclerosis (clogged blood vessels) in the leg. Arteriosclerosis also is the primary cause of heart attack, the No. 1 cause of death in the United States.

PAD affects about 10 million people in the United States, but many people don’t know they have the disease.  Those at highest risk include individuals age 50 and over who have a family history of cardiovascular disease and/or have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or are smokers, and people who are overweight and/or lead an inactive lifestyle.

A simple, painless screening can detect PAD and save your life.  The PAD screening will include a risk factor questionnaire and a simple, painless test called the Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) that compares the blood pressure in the arms and ankles.

Radiologists from Virginia Interventional & Vascular Associates and clinicians from the Virginia Heart and Vascular Institute of Mary Washington Healthcare will also be on site to offer guidance, appropriate treatment programs, education on alternatives to surgery and information on healthy living habits.

Screenings will take place at Medical Imaging of Fredericksburg, 1201-A Sam Perry Blvd., on the
MWH Campus.

Pre-registration is required. To register, call Health Link between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.  at 540.741.1404 or 800.722.2788.
