Free Lance-Star business reporter Bill Freehling has been hired as Fredericksburg’s new assistant director for economic development.

His duties will include assisting in the development of an economic development strategy, serving as the city staffer to the Fredericksburg Economic Development Authority and leading the city’s business recruitment and expansion programs, according to a press release.

“Bill has demonstrated an understanding of and commitment to our community that will
serve Fredericksburg businesses and citizens very well,” said Karen Hedelt, director of Fredericksburg Economic Development and Tourism.   “I respect him and appreciate the work he has done as a business reporter, and welcome his more active engagement in economic
development for Fredericksburg.”

Freehling received a bachelor’s degree in history from Wake Forest University and his master’s degree in mass communications/journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He lives in Fredericksburg with his wife Emily and their two children.
