Mastery Gunnery Sgt. John H. Deters received a surprise for his 88th birthday on August 2, 2014.  Marines from MCB Quantico visited the World War II veteran at his Fredericksburg nursing home.

Deters had to obtain his mother’s permission to enlist in the Marine Corps following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.  That’s because he was only 17 at the time.  He went on to serve on both Okinawa and Iwo Jima, before retiring as a master gunnery sergeant in 1962, the Quantico Sentry reported.
