Parents can save money August 1 – 3 during Virginia’s 2014 back-to-school sales tax holiday.

During this three-day period (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), purchases of qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax, according to the Virginia Department of Taxation.  Online purchases are included.

The list of all eligible school supplies also says, “Items need not be intended for use in school or in connection with a school activity to be eligible for the exemption.”

Clothing eligible for the sales tax holiday does not include sporting equipment or footwear designed primarily for athletic activity or protective use, and not usually considered appropriate for everyday wear.

Guidelines for shoppers and retailers are available online.

Virginia’s other two sales tax holidays are for hurricane preparedness in May, and for energy-efficient appliances and water-saving items in October.

The first day of the 2014-15 school year is Tuesday, Sept. 2 in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania and Stafford.
