“The Color of Leaves,” an exhibition of new works by Fredericksburg-area artist Helen Butler, is the featured show at Art First Gallery  July 1 – 27, 2014.

Butler, a 20-year member of Art First, considers herself a colorist.  “I’m interested in creating the basic form of a piece of art with color, texture and composition,” Butler said.

After years of travel and painting European landscapes, Butler returns to a favorite subject in her July show at Art First.  The leaves are rendered in pastel, oil and watercolor.

A reception will be held 6 – 9 p.m. on  July 11, during First Friday Art Walk.  The date is delayed a week since July 4 is this month’s first Friday.

Butler has shown throughout the United States and is owned by collectors here and in Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Australia, Germany and Italy.

She is a member of the North Windsor Artists, a group in the King George and Fredericksburg area created when the artists met weekly at Jack Darling’s home and studio to paint and support one another.  Darling was a prominent Virginia based artist.

Art First Gallery, located in downtown Fredericksburg at 824 Caroline St, is open daily 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., and features the works of some 30 gallery members.
