Traffic Changes, Mindfulness Week, Monsters Love Colors

MONDAY, Sept. 15

Traffic will be transitioned to a new parking section in the Route 684 (Staffordboro Blvd.) Park & Ride in Stafford County beginning September 15, 2014.  Leave extra time to navigate the changes.

River Road will be closed for Chatham work from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. from just south of the entrance to John Lee Pratt Memorial Park to the intersection of State Route 3 and River Road.

Latino Identities Month Kickoff Celebration with food and live entertainment at 4 p.m. on Ball Circle at the University of Mary Washington (UMW). Free and open to the public.

Contemplative Studies and the Liberal Arts, a lecture by Harold Roth, professor of religious studies and director of the Contemplative Studies Initiative at Brown University. A UMW Mindfulness Week event from 4 – 5 p.m. in room 412 of Lee Hall.  Free and open to the public.

TUESDAY, Sept. 16

River Road will be closed for Chatham work from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. from just south of the entrance to John Lee Pratt Memorial Park to the intersection of State Route 3 and River Road.

Picnic in the Park, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in Hurkamp Park.  Free.

Introduction to Mindfulness, a workshop by Bhante Seelananda, vice abbot of the Bhavana Society. A UMW Mindfulness Week event from 4 – 5 p.m. at Ridderhof Martin Gallery, College Avenue at Seacobeck Street.  Free and open to the public.

Civil Rights, Voting Rights, Gay Rights, and the Blues, a performance and talk by Gaye Adegbalola, a blues singer, lecturer and activist from Fredericksburg; 7 p.m. in Dodd Auditorium, George Washington Hall, UMW.  Free and open to the public.

Seven Principals of Unconditional Responsibility lecture by Dr. Chris Neibauer to benefit Startup Weekend Fredericksburg and Made in FredVa.  The event begins at 6 p.m. in Seacobeck Hall at the University of Mary Washington.  Tickets are $20 and are available online.

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 17

Introduction to Mindfulness, a workshop by Bill Brooks, co-founder of the Insight Meditation Community of Fredericksburg.  A UMW Mindfulness Week event from 12 – 12:50 p.m. in room 411 of Lee Hall.  Free and open to the public.

Recovery in Motion (RIM) is hosting a free advance directive workshop from 3 – 5 p.m. in the Goodwill Community Resource Center, 4701 Market St., Fredericksburg.

Crystal Wellman and Dr. Yum present Healthy Eating, Healthy Skin from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at The Doctor Yum Project office, 10482 Georgetown Dr., Suite B, in Spotsylvania.  Cost is $35.

THURSDAY, Sept. 18

Mindful Eating, a workshop by Nicole Surething, director of UMW’s Counseling and Psychological Services. A UMW Mindfulness Week event from 12 – 1 p.m. in room 412 of Lee Hall.  Free and open to the public.

FRIDAY, Sept. 19

FredXchange Open Coffee, 8 – 9:30 a.m. every Friday at The Center, 1514 College Ave., Fredericksburg. Free coffee provided by Blackstone Coffee.

Preschool Palette: Monsters Love Colors, introduces children ages 2 – 5 to art and art museums through developmentally appropriate activities.  Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont, 224 Washington St., Falmouth; 10 – 11 a.m.; $10 or $8 for members of Friends of Belmont; classes limited to 12 children; 540-654-1851.
