Wilson H. Greenlaw, Mayor’s Husband, Died Friday

Wilson Hunter Greenlaw died May 9.  He was 74.

Greenlaw was married to Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw for 41 years.  He was a native of Stafford County, Va.

The following is from the obituary published by Covenant Funeral Service:

“[Wilson] farmed his entire life across the county from Ferry Farm to Hartwood purchasing his first farm, Hickory Hill, when he was 15. He owned and operated Park Farm and Greenlaw’s Beef butcher shop in Fredericksburg. He was a realtor and founding partner in For Sale By Owner Magazine.

“Wilson was a 4-H All-Star and went on to be an ambassador in the International Farm Youth Exchange living with farming families in England and Wales. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a degree in animal science in 1964. He served on the board of the Virginia Cattleman’s Association and Production Credit Association of Warrenton. He was a deacon at Hartwood Presbyterian Church and a member of Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church.

“A lover of practical jokes and storytelling, Wilson recorded his stories in his 2012 book Has the Whippoorwill Cried: Recollections, Whoppers and Rib-Tickling Anecdotes from Stafford County by a Native Son.

“He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Katherine; his sons, Wilson and wife Anjanette and Richard and wife Jennifer; his stepsons, Lemuel M. Houston and wife LeeAnne and Henry G. Houston and wife Sharon. He had seven grandchildren, Eva, Braelynn, and Kinsley Greenlaw and Matt, Tyler, and Cassidy Houston and Katherine Houston Schmoyer. He is also survived by his brothers Bobby and wife Edna, Bill Greenlaw; and his sister, Martha Gardner and husband Paul.

“He was preceded in death by his parents, Grafton and Matilda Greenlaw.”

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 12, at The Presbyterian Church of Fredericksburg.  A reception was held at his home immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Presbyterian Church or the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation.
