There was all the pressure of a network TV game show like “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”– and no lifelines.

Onstage in front of an audience of about 400 at the Daniel Technology Center in Culpeper, Germanna Community College nursing students proved they can stay cool under that kind of pressure and respond with the kind of knowledge that could be crucial to saving lives in the real world.

A team of nursing students consisting of Rebecca Wilson, Erin Fowler, Allison Fischer, Joshua “J.P.” Earnest and Crystal Knight won the Germanna Comm NCLEX Bowl Friday. The team, which puckishly called itself Who Is Don Glove?, beat the Totally Magnificent Nursing Turtles (TMNT) in a close final match. TMNT consisted of Lauren Gaither, Brittany Berry, Holly Beal, Brian Fetter and Chantell Mullen.

Individual winners for best performance in the competition were Rebecca Wilson for RNs and Crystal Knight for LPNs.

Dr. Patti Lisk, GCC Dean of Nursing, said the event helps prepare students for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX ), which graduates must pass to secure their nursing licenses.

The event has evolved an earlier one called “Nursing Idol.” One major difference is audience participation. Judges ask questions, and teams onstage have 20 seconds to respond. Meanwhile, hundreds of fellow nursing students saw the questions on electronic pads, then posted their own answers to the multiple choice questions. The percentage for each possible answers appeared on the big screens at the Daniel Center.

“It went great,” Dr. Lisk said. “It was different this year because all the students were engaged. “It helps them think critically and analyze the questions and it helps them to prepare them for the NCLEX as well.” She said she was proud of the way the students performed under pressure, showing they can handle themselves in the kind of situations they will face in hospitals. “I love to see them make connections,” she said.

Another level to the competition will be added in 2016, when Germanna hosts a statewide competition as GCC NCLEX Bowl winners advance to face other top nursing students from around Virginia.
