Kids to Parks Day, Marine Corps Historic Half and More Weekend Fun

A weekend calendar pick of events in the Fredericksburg region for May 15 – 18, 2015.

U.S. Army Band Downrange
Friday, May 15, gates open at 6 p.m., concert begins at 7 p.m.
Patriot Park Amphitheater, 5710 Smith Station Rd., Fredericksburg
Bring your lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the music. Concessions will be available. No alcohol.
Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for kids 12 and under. Rain or shine.

Art in the Park at the Fredericksburg Farmers Market
Saturday, May 16, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Hurkamp Park, 500 Prince Edward St., Fredericksburg
A showcase of local artists and their talents.
Free.

Spring on the Plantation
Saturday, May 16, 10 – 4 p.m.
George Washington Birthplace National Monument, 1732 Popes Creek Rd., Colonial Beach, Va
18th century activities and demonstrations including sheep shearing, tobacco planting, blacksmithing, and open hearth cooking will be offered at Popes Creek Plantation.
Free.

National Kids to Parks Day
Saturday, May 16, 2015. There are National Kids to Parks Day activities at all 36 Virginia State Parks. View program details for each park online. Three local parks and their events are:

Lake Anna State Park
6800 Lawyers Rd., Spotsylvania, Va.
Saturday, May 16, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
10 a.m. to Noon – GPS Adventure Nature meets Technology with Geocaching. GPS units are supplied during program – Space is limited, please call (540) 854-6245 to pre-register
2 to 3 p.m. – Snakes Alive! An in depth look into the fascinating lives of some local reptiles.
Both programs are free. Regular parking fees apply.

Caledon State Park
11617 Caledon Rd., King George
Enjoy crafts and light refreshments at 10 a.m., a fossil hike down to the marsh at 2 p.m. and an Owl Prowl at 7 p.m.
Free, but space is limited. Please call 540-663-3861 for reservations.

Leesylvania State Park
2001 Daniel K. Ludwig Dr., Woodbridge
Pond Play (at Pond): 11:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
Stump a Ranger (at Playground): 1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.
Osprey Observation (at Pier): 3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.

Spotsylvania Wine Festival
Saturday, May 16, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Fredericksburg Fairgrounds, 2400 Airport Ave., Fredericksburg
Wine, food, vendors, live music and kid’s fun. Blankets and chairs are welcome. No pets.
Ticket are $15 in advance online, $25 at the gate.

Historic Fredericksburg Foundation Tour and Tea at Historic Elmhurst
Saturday, May 16, 1 – 4 p.m.
2010 Fall Hill Ave., Fredericksburg
Tours begin every 15 minutes between 1 and 4. Call 540-371-4504 for reservations. Children are not permitted, but photography is.
Members only. Cost of membership. Family membership (up to 4 family members) is $30; Individual membership is $20; Senior (62+) membership is $15. All memberships include the Elmhurst tour and a Journal of Fredericksburg History, as well as other benefits.

Marine Corps Historic Half Weekend
May 15, 16 and 17
Healthy Lifestyle Expo at the Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center, 2371 Carl D. Silver Parkway, Fredericksburg.
Packet Pick-up for the Half, 10K and 5K, vendors and exhibits.
Friday, May 15, opening ceremonies at 3:30. Open until 8 p.m.
Saturday, May 16, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Actor David McCallum, recognized for his portrayal of Dr. Donald (“Ducky”) Mallard on the CBS drama “NCIS,” will greet Historic Half runners starting at 1 p.m. on May 16 at the Healthy Lifestyle Expo. Read more at NCIS’ “Ducky” to Start Marine Corps Historic Half

The Marine Corps Historic Half begins at 7 a.m. Sunday, May 17, adjacent to the Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center. David McCallum will start the race.
