The Rappahannock Area Health District is seeking anyone who may have had contact with a stray orange tabby cat near Leavells Road and Salem Church Road on the morning of Wednesday, June 17, 2015. The cat has been laboratory confirmed to have rabies.
The health district wants to locate the following people, whom they believe may have had contact with the cat within the last two weeks. They are:
– a young male about 12-15 years old riding a bicycle in the area
– a woman driving a silver or gray SUV who assisted another “Good Samaritan” with the rescue of the cat
Anyone else who had contact with this cat, or any wild or pet animal behaving strangely should be evaluated for exposure to rabies.
Please contact the health department at 540-322-5980 as soon as possible. If left untreated, rabies is fatal to both animals and humans.
