Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hot Spots for the Fredericksburg Region
July 19 – July 25, 2015

City of Fredericksburg

Fall Hill Avenue
Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; traffic will be reduced to a single lane intermittently for tree removal and brush clearing between Rappahannock Canal and Wicklow Drive. Motorists will be directed through the work zone by flaggers. Expect brief delays when stops are needed.

Under Construction
Fall Hill Avenue Widening and I-95 Overpass Replacement Project
Construction is underway on the Fall Hill Avenue widening and I-95 overpass replacement project. Motorists should expect lane closures and brief delays on Fall Hill Avenue between the Rappahannock Canal Bridge and Carl D. Silver Boulevard. The project is expected to be complete in January 2017.

Stafford County

Interstate 95
(New) Monday – Tuesday, 9 a.m. – noon; crews will be inspecting the overhead sign structures on the southbound side of I-95 between Exit 140 (Rt. 630/Stafford) and Exit 143 (Rt. 610/Garrisonville). Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures and brief delays in the mobile work zone.

(New) Wednesday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.; motorists should expect single or double lane closures and travel delays on the northbound side of I-95 between Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) and Exit 140 (Rt. 630/Stafford). Crews will be milling and paving in this area.

Line Painting Operation
(Update) Crews will continue line painting on various secondary routes in the area of Route 1, Route 17 and Route 218. Motorists traveling in these areas should be alert to slow moving vehicles; expect delays; and avoid passing in the mobile work zone. Passing in the work zone may cause tracking of the freshly painted lines and the wet paint may adhere to the vehicle. Line painting will take place Monday through Friday during daylight hours. The work is expected to be complete in approximately two weeks, weather permitting.

Falmouth Intersection Improvement Project
Motorists should be alert to the following lane closures associated with the Falmouth Intersection Improvement project.

Route 17

(New) Sunday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.; motorists will be restricted to one lane on the eastbound side of Route 17 in the vicinity of Route 1. Crews will be installing guardrail.

(New) Wednesday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.; traffic on the westbound side of Route 17 will be shifted to the eastbound side of Route 17 at the Route 1 intersection. There will be two-way traffic (one lane in each direction) on the eastbound side of Route 17 at the Route 1 intersection. Crews will be repairing the pavement on the westbound side of Route 17.

Route 1

(New) Sunday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.; motorists will be restricted to one lane on the northbound side of Route 1 from the Falmouth Bridge to just north of Forbes Street. Crews will be replacing curb and gutter in this area.

Route 1 at Truslow Road
Monday – Thursday; motorists should be alert to construction activity at the intersection of Truslow Road and Route 1. The intersection will remain open, but motorists should expect intermittent lane closures, and follow the direction of flagging crews.

Routine Maintenance Activities
(Update) Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Crews will be performing routine maintenance that may cause brief travel delays at the following locations:

Route 608 (Brooke Road) – shoulder work
Route 218 (White Oak Road) – shoulder work
Route 634 (Berea Church Road) – shoulder work
Route 624 (Morton Road) – shoulder work
Route 658 (Brent Point Road) – mowing
Route 687 (Hope Road) – mowing
Route 635 (Decatur Road) – mowing
Route 627 (Mountain View Road) – mowing
Route 690 (Sandy Ridge Road) – mowing
Route 603 (Newton Road) – mowing
Route 606 (Ferry Road) – mowing
Route 600 (Bethel Church Road) – mowing
Route 612 (Tackets Mill Road) – pipe replacement
Route 611 (Widewater Road) – patching

Under Construction
Route 17
Construction is underway to widen Route 17 from four to six lanes between McLane Drive and Stafford Lakes Parkway, a distance of nearly 2 miles. The work zone extends from just south of the I-95 interchange to Cardinal Forest Drive. Motorists should be alert to changes in traffic pattern and periodic overnight lane closures. Project completion date is December 2016.

Falmouth Intersection (Route 1/Route 17 Business/Route 218)
Construction is underway. Motorists should be prepared for brief delays and periodic lane closures on Butler Road and Route 1 just north and south of the Falmouth intersection. Project completion date is September 2015.

Spotsylvania County

Interstate 95
(New) Sunday – Wednesday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.; crews will be milling and paving on I-95 south between Exit 126 (Route 1/Spotsylvania) and Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg). Motorists should expect single or double lane closures and travel delays in the work zone.

Route 3
(New) Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.; crews will be repairing the pavement on the east and westbound side of Route 3 in the vicinity of Andora Drive. Motorists should expect lane closures and brief delays in this area.

Gordon Road Park & Ride Lot
(New) This week commuters will be shifted to the new portion of the Route 627 (Gordon Road) Park & Ride lot to allow crews to focus on refurbishing the existing lot. There will be approximately 350 spaces available for commuter parking. The existing lot, approximately 300 spaces, will be closed for approximately six weeks. The Gordon Road entrance to the lot and the access road linking the parking areas will remain open during peak commuting hours. Brief closures will be needed during off-peak hours to finish construction in the lot. Any entrance or access road closures will be communicated in advance. Route 17 (Mills Drive) – mowing
Route 618 (River Road) – mowing
Route 608 (Massaponax Church Road – mowing
Route 635 (Lee Hill School Drive) – ditching
Route 617 (Hams Ford Road) – patching
Route 656 (Towles Mill Road) – patching
Route 1521 (Eustace Road) – patching
Route 1779 (Quail Meadows Drive) – patching
Route 721 (Lanes Corner) – surface treatment prep work

Under Construction
Route 17/Benchmark Road/Crossroads Parkway
Motorists should expect lane closures and brief traffic stops on Route 17 at Benchmark Road and Crossroads Parkway, located just east of the CSX railroad tracks and west of Jim Morris Road. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone. This work is related to construction of a new Virginia Railway Express train station and parking lot. This project is being administered by Spotsylvania County.

Caroline County

Traveler Alert
(New) Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; crews will be removing pavement markings at the following locations this week. Motorists should expect brief delays in the work zone:

Route 17 (northbound) – from approximately one mile north of Route 719 (north end of Mt. Creek Bridge) to the Spotsylvania County line.

Route 207 (northbound) – from the north end of Polecat Creek Bridge to the south end of the Mattaponi River Bridge.

Routine Maintenance Activities
(Update) Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Crews will be performing routine maintenance that may cause brief travel delays at the following locations:

Route 1 – ditching
Route 17 – brush cutting
Route 301 – brush cutting and mowing
Route 207 – mowing
Route 658 – mowing
Route 601 – mowing
Route 633 – mowing
Route 639 – sweeping
Route 652 – sweeping
Route 665 – patching
Route 674 – patching

King George County

Route 218
(Update) Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; crews continue tree trimming work on the eastbound side of Route 218. Motorists should expect brief delays between Route 609 (Comron Road) and Route 610 (Indiantown Road).

Under Construction
Route 218 at Machodoc Creek
Construction is underway on the Machodoc Creek bridge replacement project. Traffic on the bridge has been reduced to one lane. Temporary traffic signals at each approach to the bridge control traffic crossing the bridge. The signals will remain in place through July 2015. Motorists can expect an additional 5-10 minutes to cross the bridge during peak travel times on weekday mornings and afternoons. In addition, a 10 foot lane width restriction for vehicles is in place.
