Massaponax High School art teacher Patricia Atkinson, Tricia, is opening her own art school, gallery and private tattoo studio.

The grand opening of Figure 8 Ink Studios, 10813 Courthouse Rd., Suite 110, in Spotsylvania, is from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015. There will be live music, food, face painting and a $30 discount for any art class registration or tattoo appointment.

“I wanted to open my own art school because I could have the freedom to teach the curriculum that I feel is most impactful, and also open my classes to all different ages and skill levels,” Atkinson said. She will also teach part-time at Massaponax High School through the 2015-16 school year.

The art school features eight class choices in a variety of media including drawing, painting, pottery, art technology, and mixed media textiles. “I also have an art gallery for showing local artists and student work,” Atkinson said.

She’ll also take custom tattoo appointments. “Tattoos are a decorative celebration of individuality, identity and culture,” Atkinson said. “I look forward to continuing to help bring clients’ visions of self to life through the design and application of inks.”

Atkinson chose her business name based on the figure of the number eight. “It’s a composition type in fine arts and the tattoo industry generally considered to be aesthetically pleasing and creating a feeling of finish and completeness,” she said. “[For me], the formation is a connection between the two worlds.”

The Spotsylvania resident is a 2008 graduate of the University of Mary Washington, where she majored in Studio Art. She has a Master’s Degree in Education Technology and Media Design from Full Sail University. In addition, she studied and worked at Ugly Bishop’s Tattoo Shop in Fredericksburg.
