Detour barriers have been placed along the Rappahannock River Heritage Trail in the 400 block of Riverside Drive due to a slope failure on the riverbank.
The detour will protect trail users from any future expansion of the failed slope, and create a work area for eventual repair and stabilization of the riverbank.
The detour into the parking lane of Riverside Drive on the west side of the street is about 300 feet long. “The width of the path through the detour area is only about five feet, so trail users should be especially careful passing those travelling in the opposite direction,” said Doug Fawcett, director of public works. Bicyclists are encouraged to walk their bicycles through the detour.
“The slope failure is significant, and it will take some time to determine the extent of the failure and then design and perform the repair and stabilization of the riverbank,” Fawcett said. It could take up to 90 days or longer.
The Heritage Trail is a 1.6 mile asphalt stretch that connects the two parts of the Canal Path, making a 3.1 mile loop.
