Fredericksburg Churches Host World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation Service

by | Aug 23, 2015 | News

Several Fredericksburg churches are joining together to participate in the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015.

The interfaith prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site), 801 Sophia St., Fredericksburg.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople initiated a prayer day for the environment for the Orthodox Church in 1989. Pope Francis announced this month his decision to add the annual prayer day to the Catholic calendar. The Pope suggested all Christians join in prayer on September 1. “Living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience,” he said in a statement.

Local churches that so far have announced they are participating in the interfaith service praying for the environment are St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, St. George’s Episcopal Church, Christ Lutheran Church of Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg Baptist Church, and Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome.
