Above the Darkness Event for Suicide Awareness and Prevention

by | Sep 14, 2015 | Health & Wellness

Suicide takes a life every 15 minutes and affects more than 33,000 families every year, according to save.org. “But there is a way to spread awareness and support programs that save lives,” said Amy Jones, mental health initiative manager, therapeutic clinician, and director of Above the Darkness.

Above the Darkness, a walk and concert for suicide prevention, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at Spotsylvania Courthouse Village, 9010 Old Battlefield Blvd., Spotsylvania, Va. Mental Health of America of Fredericksburg is this year’s new partner.

“All proceeds from the event will stay in the Greater Fredericksburg area to support suicide prevention programs and spread awareness of this preventable cause of death,” Jones said.

Above the Darkness will include a memory wall to celebrate the lives of those affected by suicide, and colored beads representing how each participant has been touched by suicide. The expanded event will also include family activities and live entertainment until 4 p.m. All walkers will receive free food and beverages after the walk, and those who raise at least $25 will receive a t-shirt.
