Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters (RBBBS) students received free desktop computers from Cox Communications in December 2015.

“This donation is an extension of Cox’s commitment to providing local youth with the tools and technology they need to be successful in school and beyond,” said J.D. Myers, II, senior vice president and region manager for Cox Communications Virginia.

According the U.S. Census Bureau, only about 62 percent of low-income households reported having a computer in the home. “Without technology at home, these students are struggling to keep up,” Myers said.

“Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters welcomes this donation of computers from our community partner Cox Communications for the children we serve through one-to-one mentoring,” said Michelle Hedrick, executive director of Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters. “These computers provide a great boost to helping children attain the essential skills they need to have educational success.”

Along with the free computers, students and their families also received information about Connect2Compete, a program that provides low-cost, high-speed Internet to qualifying families in Cox communities throughout Virginia, and Take Charge!, a community outreach campaign that teachers safe and healthy digital behavior.

The donation to Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters is a part of a larger, statewide initiative. Big Brothers Big Sisters members and their families in Roanoke, Newport News and Fairfax, Va. were also recipients of desktop computers. The statewide donation total was 245 computers, Myers said.
