A blizzard watch is in effect as a “potentially crippling winter storm” moves into the Mid-Atlantic region Friday, Jan. 22, 2016, into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
Heavy snow is expected Friday afternoon through Saturday night, with strong winds blowing and drifting the snow, causing “potential life threatening conditions,” The Weather Channel reports.
While snowfall is expected to approach two feet for some locations, including the Baltimore and Washington, DC, metro areas, predicted accumulation totals vary greatly by location. For example, as of Thursday morning, Jan. 21, The Weather Channel is calling for 1 to 3 inches on Friday with another 5 to 8 inches on Saturday for Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania.
Sleet may mix with the snow Friday night into Saturday morning east of I-95, before changing back to all snow by Saturday afternoon.
Travel is expected to be severely limited, if not impossible. Visibility will be reduced to near zero at times in whiteout conditions.
A blizzard watch means severe winter weather is possible. Residents are encouraged to adjust travel plans and planned activities, stock-up on necessities, make plans for the elderly and those at risk, and prepare for possible power outages.
