“The President’s Own Band Concert: “Sousa Season Opener”

John Philip Sousa is known as the American March King. He conducted the U.S. Marine Band from 1880 – 1892. Among his best-known marches are “The Stars and Stripes Forever” (National March of the United States of America), “Semper Fidelis” (Official March of the United States Marine Corps).

Jan. 14 – Jack London by James L. Haley London became the best-selling writer in America in the early twentieth century. Despite his success, however, he never got over the impact of being born poor and illegitimate. That background continued to influence his life, leading him to become a passionate and lifelong advocate for social justice.

Jan. 21 – Georgia O’Keeffe by Roxana Robinson Georgia O’Keeffe is one of the greatest American artists of the twentieth century.

Jan. 28 – Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” is her first book. It took more than a decade to research and instantly became a New York Times best-seller. In 1951, a a poor southern tobacco farmer named Henrietta developed a strangely aggressive cancer, and doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital took a tissue sample without her knowledge. The cells became one of the most important tools in medicine, and are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa, as scientists knew her, is buried in an unmarked grave.

Canstruction® 2016

Teams from Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, Locust Grove and King George will build sculptures out of canned goods depicting how to make a difference in the lives of the hungry in our community. Judging for the“People’s Choice Award” will be open to the public through the donation of $1 or one canned good per vote on Saturday and Sunday, with the official judging for all other categories taking place at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Center Court. All proceeds benefit the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank.

UMW’s annual Jefferson Lecture commemorating the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom was drafted in 1777 by Thomas Jefferson in Fredericksburg. The Virginia General Assembly enacted it into law on January 16, 1786.
