Free Help Preparing Your Tax Return

Internal Revenue Service (IRS)-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals in local communities.

In the Fredericksburg area, Rappahannock United Way (RUW) is one of the providers of IRS-certified free tax preparation assistance.

RUW Free Tax Services Program
The RUW Free Tax Services Program offers free tax help to people who earned $62,000 or less in 2015, and need help preparing their own tax returns. Details are available at RUW Free Tax Services Program

Free Coached Returns
Use a computer and internet connection to prepare and file your taxes. If you have questions, one of the RUW volunteers will assist you with your return. It’s free. RUW free tax sites are located throughout the greater Fredericksburg area. All tax sites operate on a first come, first served basis. View the RUW Free Tax Sites calendar for locations and times.

Free Online Filing
If you’re willing and able to file on your own, you may qualify for Intuit’s Turbo Tax Online Freedom Edition or My Free Taxes.
– If you made $31,000 or less during 2015, use TurboTax Online’s Freedom Edition
– If you made $62,000 or less during 2015, use MyFreeTaxes.com

Other Locations and Free Tax Help Providers
Visit IRS.gov/vita for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program information and locations. VITA and TCE provide free tax preparation assistance for qualifying people who generally make $54,000 or less, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and people with limited knowledge of English.
