Every night children in Virginia go to sleep hungry, abused, and neglected.

When children are removed from these desperate circumstances, they are placed in a foster home. “For most children this home is the first time they will ever experience stability, trust, and love,” said Gretchen Rusden, Therapeutic Foster Care recruitment coordinator for National Counseling Group (NCG). “Families who display these qualities are always in high demand.”

National Counseling Group is holding an informal information session at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016, at Dorothy Hart Community Center, 408 Canal St. in Fredericksburg.

“We will be discussing the steps it takes to become a foster parent, the types of children that are placed with our agency and the support we offer,” Rusden said.

Treatment foster care, also called therapeutic foster care, involves placement of children with foster families who have been specially trained to care for children with certain medical or behavioral needs. Examples include medically fragile children and children with emotional or behavioral disorders.

National Counseling Group is the largest provider of community-based behavioral health services in the Virginia. The behavioral health care agency provides services for crisis situations, outpatient services and in home therapy, along with treatment foster care.
