(L to R) Rachel Michael and her trainer Lulu Wheeler with the Arianna Cox Jr. Sportsmanship Award perpetual trophy.

Rachel Michael was awarded the 2015 Arianna Cox Jr. Sportsmanship Award at the Battlefield Horse Show Association (BHSA) Awards Banquet in Fredericksburg.

The perpetual trophy in memory of Arianna Cox is presented annually to a junior exhibitor who exemplifies good sportsmanship, integrity, honesty and adherence to the BHSA rules throughout the show year. Show managers of all BHSA sanctioned shows select the recipient.

“Rachel always has a smile on her face and a wonderful attitude,” Hazelwild Farm Trainer Teresa Seay said in the nomination. “She often helps out with jump changes, no matter who is hosting the show.”

The 16-year-old began riding at Woodlawn Stables when she was ten, and trained with Lulu Wheeler at Star Bound Farm in Northern Virginia. She now rides and trains at The Madeira School in McLean, Va., where she is a senior.

The Arianna Cox Jr. Sportsmanship Award was founded in 2012 to honor the 11-year-old BHSA member who died on August 26, 2011.

Previous winners of the Arianna Cox Jr. Sportsmanship Award are Casandra Stepanovich (2014) Koelber Hawley (2013) and Bobby Dunlap (2012).

BHSA was established in 1997 to promote and improve the Hunter and Jumper shows in the region, and provide a vehicle for members to participate in a year-end awards program. BHSA shows must be located 80 miles or less from the center of Fredericksburg, within the state of Virginia.
