EDA Approves Grant for Red Dragon Brewery, Support for Fred CAT

by | Mar 15, 2016 | Business

The Fredericksburg Economic Development Authority (EDA) approved during its March 14, 2016, meeting a $25,000 grant to Tom Evans and Dan Baker for the planned opening of Red Dragon Brewery at 1419 Princess Anne St. “The money will be used to assist with the business’ plans to open the microbrewery and improve the look of the property,” said Bill Freehling, assistant director for Economic Development. The brewery is planned for a 4,000 square foot portion of an industrial building at that location.

The EDA also approved a five-year year grant totaling $125,000 to help fund Germanna Community College’s planned Fredericksburg Center for Advanced Technology (Fred CAT). Germanna will receive $25,000 a year for five years.

Germanna would like to lease a 7,500 square-foot space in the City of Fredericksburg, where they would provide entry level and advanced skills training, certifications, and apprenticeship programs targeted to high demand fields supporting the region’s advanced manufacturing, construction and industrial trades. “These trades require more than a high school diploma, but not necessarily a college degree,” said GCC President Dr. David Sam.

“We also discussed downtown parking, and we plan to work on developing a survey on that topic,” Freehling said. The survey will include questions about whether patrons and restaurants would support a valet parking program downtown.
