Ahold USA Does Not Expect to Close Any Giant Food Stores After Merger

Ahold USA, Inc., parent company of Giant of Maryland, “[does] not anticipate any store closures” resulting from their merger with the Delhaize Group.

United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 400 and Giant Food employees held a press conference and rally outside the Eagle Village Giant on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, voicing concern for their jobs. Progressive Grocer had reported that as many as 83 stores — six in Fredericksburg — could be closed because of the merger.

Local Giant Workers Rally for Their Jobs

Chris Brand, External Communications and Public Affairs lead for Ahold USA, contacted Fredericksburg Today with the following statement:

“Ahold USA, Inc., parent company of Giant of Maryland, continues to work toward the successful completion of the proposed merger between Ahold and the Delhaize Group. The merger is currently under review by regulatory and competition authorities, including by the Federal Trade Commission in the U.S. The merger remains on track for completion in mid-2016. We do not anticipate any store closures as part of the FTC merger approval process.”
