Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw and Este Mayor Giancarlo Piva signed a sister city proclamation in a ceremony at city hall on April 13, 2016.

“Confirming this relationship brings Fredericksburg into conversation with the wider world, a benefit for cultural and economic reasons,” Greenlaw said. “Such outreach enriches lives and offers infinite possibilities for partnership.”

The Fredericksburg-Este Association was established in March 2015. In September 2015, a small delegation represented Fredericksburg at the Italian proclamation signing ceremony in Este. Today’s ceremony in Fredericksburg completed the official establishment of the sister city partnership.

A delegation from Este, headed by Massimo Giordano, is visiting Fredericksburg from April 8 to 15. Giordano was posted to the Italian Embassy in Washington from 2012 – 2015, and was instrumental in establishing the sister city partnership.

Este is located in the Veneto region in northeast Italy, about 60 miles from Venice.
