Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park will continue to combine health and history in the National Park Service’s Centennial year with a new series of Fit-History Hikes

These ranger-led hikes are designed to flip a traditional park program on its head. Instead of 80 percent talking and 20 percent walking, these programs will be 80 percent walking with some talking mixed in. This season’s hikes will range from 2 to 6 miles in duration. All hikes will begin at 10 a.m. and finish by noon, unless otherwise indicated.

April 2: Chancellorsville: Site of the First Day’s Fighting (2 miles)
Join historian Beth Parnicza to explore the location of the May 1st fighting during the Battle of Chancellorsville. Meet in the trail parking area, 6159 Plank Rd, Fredericksburg, 22407.

April 16: Chancellorsville: Chancellorsville History Trail (4 mile loop)
Join historian Frank O’Reilly, and take a hike on one of the park’s most popular trails. Meet at the Chancellorsville Visitor Center, 9001 Plank Road, Spotsylvania, 22553.

April 30: Wilderness: Higgerson Farm to the Federal Line (2.5 miles)
Join historian Becky Oakes on a rarely walked trail from the Higgerson Farm to the Federal Line. Meet at Stop #4 on the Wilderness Battlefield.

May 14: Spotsylvania History Trail (5.7 miles)
Join historian Mike Westermeier to explore the Spotsylvania History Trail. This hike will extend past noon. Meet at the Spotsylvania Exhibit Shelter, 9550 Grant Drive West, Spotsylvania 22553.

When attending any of our Fit-History programs, please remember to wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water, and pack a snack. Bug spray and long pants are also suggested.
