Battle of Chancellorsville 153rd Anniversary

Meet at the First Day at Chancellorsville, 6159 Plank Rd., Spotsylvania
Spark of Battle: The First Day at Chancellorsville
Join historians Frank O’Reilly and Mike Westermeier for a three-hour hike following the entire trail on the Civil War Trust’s First Day at Chancellorsville battlefield. The tour will walk slightly over two miles, exploring the initial clash of armies and the circumstances leading to battle at Chancellorsville.

This revival of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” parades you through a day in the life of the ever hopeful Charlie Brown, complete with his sassy little sister Sally (“My New Philosophy”), bossy friend, Lucy (“The Doctor Is In”), her brainy brother Linus (“My Blanket and Me”), piano prodigy Schroeder (“Beethoven Day”), and loveable beagle, Snoopy (“Suppertime”). Will Charlie Brown ever find the meaning of happiness? Come find out.

Mother’s Day Eve at Lake Anna Winery: Live Music, Dancing, Wine and Crepes

Moms are Free on Mother’s Day at Montpelier

Montpelier, 11407 Constitution Highway, Montpelier Station, Va.
Montpelier, home to President James Madison and First Lady Dolley Madison, is offering free admission to mothers of all ages who visit with a paying child. Moms are Free promotion applies exclusively to any Daily Tour. All visitors are asked to check in at the Visitor Center.

Civil War Mother’s Day Observance at Ellwood Manor
Sunday, May 8, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Ellwood Manor, 36380 Constitution Highway, Locust Grove, Va.
Friends of Wilderness Battlefield volunteer interpreters will read aloud from letters written by Civil War soldiers to their mothers, wives, and grandmothers as a special Mother’s Day tribute. Readings will take place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be live Civil War era music played Evergreen Shade. The house will be open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and volunteer interpreters will be available to talk with visitors and answer questions. Light refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
The event is free and open to the public.

Marine Corps Historic Half and Semper 5ive Weekend
Historic Half Weekend begins at the Healthy Lifestyle Expo,
Friday, May 13, 4 – 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 14, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center, 2371 Carl D. Silver Pkwy., Fredericksburg
Visit 60+ booths featuring apparel, exercise, food, health and military appreciation.
Races are on Sunday, May 15, 7 – 11 a.m.
Runners on the 13.1 mile course start in Central Park. The new five-mile distance run, which replaces the 5K and 10K, begins in the Fall Hill neighborhood. Both runs wind through historic Fredericksburg downtown streets.

4th Annual Living in the Garden Symposium

Join the Master Gardener Association of the Central Rappahannock Area for their 4th Annual Living in the Garden Symposium. Topics include The Joy of Gardening, Renovating Mature and Frequently Neglected Gardens, and Plant Growth. The day includes a walking tour of the trees and shrubs on UMW’s campus.
Registration ($40 – $50) includes a box lunch. May 9 is the registration deadline.

Joella and Michael Killian of the University of Mary Washington’s Department of Biological Sciences on Saturday lead this nature walk on FOR’s trails and canal path. Explore birds, plants, insects, and natural edibles along the Rappahannock River.

Our Community Salutes of Fredericksburg, VA, is a non-profit, all volunteer organization with one purpose — to recognize, thank, and honor graduating seniors who are enlisting in the Armed Forces. The U.S. Representative Rob Wittman (VA-1) is the keynote speaker.

Fredericksburg Festival for the Performing Arts’ 29th Annual Chamber Music Festival

Historic Fredericksburg Foundation Preservation Tour

Downtown Fredericksburg – the meeting location will be given when tour fee is paid.
This new walking tour of about one mile will look at some of the victories of historic preservation. Some building locations include steps.

4th Annual Gordonsville Famous Fried Chicken Festival

Gordonsville is famous for its fried chicken, which was served to passengers of trains stopping in town during the late 19th and early 20th centuries by local women carrying platters of the delicacy on their heads. Nationally-known at that time, Gordonsville’s fried chicken earned the town the nickname of “chicken-leg center of the universe”. Today, the Cooper family holds the secret recipe for Gordonsville’s famous fried chicken.

American Girl Doll Tea Party

Bring your American Girl Doll to this historic property for a tea party. Built by George Washington’s youngest brother Charles in about 1760, the home became a tavern in 1792. It’s now owned by Washington Heritage Museums.

Fredericksburg National Cemetery Luminary
Saturday, May 28, 8 – 11 p.m.
Fredericksburg National Cemetery, located at the junction of Sunken Road and Lafayette Boulevard.
A luminaria will be lit for each of the 15,300 soldiers buried here. Taps will be played throughout the evening. Due to limited parking, a free shuttle service will operate from the University of Mary Washington parking lot on the corner of William St. and Sunken Rd. Handicapped parking will be available in the parking lot behind the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center, with another shuttle operating between that point and the cemetery.
Free. Rain date is Sunday, May 29. No pets, please.

Fredericksburg National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony
Monday, May 30, 12 noon
Fredericksburg National Cemetery, Sunken Road and Lafayette Boulevard.
The National Park Service hosts this annual ceremony honoring the our nation’s fallen soldiers. Veteran and former Fredericksburg City Council Member Rev. Hashmel Turner will deliver the keynote address. The ceremony will last approximately 30 minutes.
Free.

White House Band Memorial Day Concert

The White House Band is a group of musicians who at some point in their careers played at The White House with our nation’s Washington-based military bands. Their Memorial Day Concert will honor our fallen soldiers.
