Fredericksburg resident Melissa Crane has been appointed to the board and named treasurer of Young Marines, a national non-profit education and service program for youth.

Crane is the assistant director, assurance and financial reporting, for the Department of Homeland Security in Washington, D.C.

She joined the Marine Corps in 1982, and served in key administrative positions, including with the division Inspector General, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, and as administrative chief to the 12th and 13th Sergeant Majors of the Marine Corps. She received the Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.

Crane retired from the Marine Corps in 2003, after 21 years of service.

“Melissa brings tremendous leadership, an understanding of our mission and the gravitas of a senior manager,” said Young Marines Board Chairman William Smith. “Her appointment can be summed up in one word – exciting.”
