Midnight Madness Registration Open for City Kids

Registration is open for the City of Fredericksburg’s James E. Bailey Midnight Madness summer program, which begins Friday, June 24, 2016.

Kids 11 to 17 can participate in a variety of games and activities from 7:30 – 11 p.m. every Friday through August 26, except July 1. It’s being held in the Walker-Grant Middle School gym at 1 Learning Lane in Fredericksburg.

The program was re-initiated last year by City Councilman Chuck Frye (Ward 4). “Midnight Madness ran for a few years in the 1990s, and it filled a void,” Frye said. “I worked with city agencies to revamp it, and made it a council initiative so that it will stick around.”

Activities include games, basketball, jump rope, and two play stations — one hooked to a big screen. “Our goal is for there to be interaction between the kids, and between the kids and adults,” Frye said. “It lets the kids see and interact with adults outside of school, and it strengthens communication.”

Midnight Madness is a collaboration of Fredericksburg City Council, the Fredericksburg Police Department, Fredericksburg City Public Schools, and Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation.

Pre-registration is required, and bus transportation is available.

To register, visit the Dorothy Hart Community Center, 408 Canal St. in Fredericksburg, with a copy of the child’s birth certificate. The program is only open to City of Fredericksburg (22401) residents. The Dorothy Hart Community Center registration desk is open 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Friday.

For more information, call Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation at 540-372-1086.
