Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw and At-Large City Council Members Kerry Devine and Matt Kelly took the oath of office in a noon ceremony on July 1, 2016. All three were reelected to their seats in the city’s May 3 general election.

John Hennessy, Chief Historian and Chief of Interpretation for Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, presented the keynote address. The Honorable Gordon F. Willis, presiding judge for the City of Fredericksburg Circuit Court, presented the oath of office.

City Council unanimously reelected Billy Withers vice mayor. Kathleen Dooley was reappointed city attorney; Tonya Lacey was reappointed clerk of council; and Brenda Martin was reappointed deputy clerk of council.

City staff presented Mayor Greenlaw with a gavel in her favorite color — teal — which she used to begin and end the Oath of Office Ceremony and Organizational Meeting.

City Council members are elected to four year terms, with elections staggered by two years.

Town Hall Market House at 907 Princess Anne St, where the oath of office ceremony took place, is the second oldest continuously used town hall in the United States. It is home to the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center.
